Michelle Thompson has a broad range of interests in technology, satellite, radio (W6NWG, AMSAT), violin, the mathematics of music, and local telephone.  She simultaneously serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors at Traceroad Incorporated, Pathfinder at Optimized Tomfoolery, Volunteer Engineer at AMSAT, Second Violin with the Greater San Diego Music Coterie (Orchestra) and Trustee W6NWG with the Palomar Amateur Radio Club. She contributes to the IEEE through her efforts with several IEEE societies and groups: Computer Society, Women in Engineering, Information Theory, Circuits and Systems, Communications Society, Robotics and Automation, Microwave Theory and Techniques, Brain Community, Software Defined Networks Community, Internet of Things Community, and STEM Activities.

Ms. Thomson has an MS in Information Theory from the University of Southern California, and completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Her Distinguished Visitors Program lecture—a synthesis of her interests in technology and music—examines the algorithmic composition of music, including current efforts to employ machine learning, deep learning, Markov chains, and bio mimicry. In her abstract, Ms. Thompson explains, “Algorithms that replace human composers are controversial and not yet fully realized, but algorithms that assist human composers exist and are here to stay.”
